Lecture 12: LIS Management and Managers/Budgeting

Find whether a small, medium, or large pond will work best for your present needs and goals.
But you can try to make every pond work best for you.

Reporting:  keeping those, who the executive is accountable to, informed through record, research, inspection and public relations

Mack Truck Management- If I got hit by a mack truck today, my library would be able to go on without me.

Budgeting: basic financial management tool; the manifestation of goals and objectives
  • A budget is a form of communication that serves 6 functions
    • keeps a record of the past
    • makes a statement about the future
    • makes predictions about the future
    • is a mechanism for allocating resources
    • is a form of power
    • gives signals

From Amy:
The guest speaker, Ruth Riley, Director of the USC School of Medicine Library, made several points-
  • When you're dealing with medical personnel it poses different parameters and the requirements provide additional separate revenue streams of research money from NIH and clinical income
  • Different institutions offer different opportunities
  • At USC, the less dominating bureaucracies attached to making staff changes and other changes allow for more independent decisions and autonomy
  • Middle management/HR learning opportunities are better at larger institutions
  • There is a trend now for directors to retire, which can create a political vacuum

From Tina:
"Knowing how to hold a good meeting is an art which requires practice and is a good skill to have."  I think this is a really good point.  The video provided good guidelines for holding a meeting.
You need:
  • a strong moderator who plans effectively
  • a clearly defined purpose
  • the appropriate members participating
  • a complete agenda
  • agreed upon norms
  • participation from all
  • time limits
  • informed input
  • wrap-up of the meeting, agenda building for next time
